KIND CONGRATULATES THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AND U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE ON RELEASE OF THE 2015-2020 DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR AMERICANS


NEW YORK (January 7, 2016)KIND congratulates the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services on the release of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) and its stance on dietary fat and added sugar. We applaud the departments’ focus on limiting saturated fat consumption to 10 percent or less of total calories and shifting away from previous limits on total fat consumption of 20 to 35 percent of total calories, in accordance with the latest nutrition science and recommendation of nutrition experts.


In fact, this same science and expert opinion informed KIND’s recent petition to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) requesting a change to the regulatory definition of the term healthy as a nutrient content claim. The regulation, which limits the use of the term to individual foods that have 3 g or less of total fat and 1 g or less of saturated fat and fish and meat with 5 g or less of total fat and 2 g or less of saturated fat, was created more than 20 years ago when the science pointed to a limit on total fat intake. However, the current regulation precludes nutrient-rich foods such as nuts, avocados, olives and salmon – the same foods recommended in the new Guidelines as well as in previous editions – from using the term healthy as a nutrient content claim.


KIND also supports the Dietary Guidelines’ recommendation to limit added sugars to no more than 10 percent of total calories. KIND emphasized that support late last year in its comments to FDA as it considers placing a daily value – also 10 percent of total calories – for added sugars on the Nutrition Facts Panel, making it easier for consumers to understand the amount of added sugar in the foods they eat. We recently announced that we would be lowering the added sugar in our seven of our original Fruit & Nut Bars by 15 to 51 percent. Those bars will appear on store shelves this spring.


KIND was also excited about the DGA recommendation to use snacking occasions as an opportunity to improve the intake of nutritious foods and create healthy eating patterns. That’s why KIND is committed to creating wholesome, nutrient-dense snacks made with nuts, fruit and whole grains.
